It is famous for land based southern right whale watching during the southern winter and spring and has been hailed as the best in the world. The whales can be seen from the cliffs in the town centre as early as June and usually depart in early December. Hermanus is classified as having a warm-summer Mediterranean climate.

There are many wonderful beaches to be enjoyed along our beautiful coastline be it lazing in the sun or surfing for fun. Grotto Beach is the largest beach in Hermanus and has also been proclaimed a "Blue Flag" beach. Blue flag beaches meet international Environment, Safety and Management criteria. Other beaches with Blue Flag status include Hawston beach. Appealing to all tourists and locals alike, are The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, nestled between mountains and stretching 6.7 kilometres from Hermanus, taking you on a quiet meander among small vineyards.
